DAVID GUETTA ROCKS SPIN NIGHT CLUB
| ||||||||
|
I drove by the entrance to Spin Nightclub, located in downtown Minneapolis, on a cold and dry night. Jesus, I thought, is that really the club? There was a line stretching down the block, and it was long past the time that the doors had opened. David Guetta wasn't even on yet, yet people had lined up in the below-freezing weather, clutching their tickets and yanking down their mini-skirts. Everyone was here to see David Guetta, DJ Mag's top House DJ of 2008.
After some haggling at the door, I walked into a hectic scene. The air was thick with anticipation and the smell of perfume and cologne. Taking a look around, I noticed that I was surrounded by people that wouldn't normally mix, but had all come together for one night in the name of music. Guetta says that at his shows “the idea is to have people who don't normally mix”. This was definitely true Tuesday night at Spin. As I stood watching the opening DJ, I was sandwiched between a pair of Arab-speaking university students and a couple grinding away the angst of the workweek. "Guetta says that at his shows “the idea is to have people who don't normally mix”" When Guetta finally came on, the crowd erupted and cheered as the strobe lights and lasers pulsated. It's always tricky to see how the DJ replacing the opener deals with they inheritage, but Guetta handled it like the weathered professional that he is. He picked up the mic and said “Are you ready to get…funky!?!? The crowd screamed in response. He opened with the 2004 club anthem “Just a Little More Love”, which received an overwhelming response from the party-goers.
Over the next hour, he played songs from his 2004 album Guetta Blaster and 2003's F*** Me I'm Famous, and sprinkled in a few other club anthems that rocked the club and made people move. His unique and powerful variety of house was simply amazing to hear mixed in person, and Guetta's laid-back personality came through on the decks as the sexual essence of house music seeped from the pores of his fans. "(...)Guetta's laid-back personality came through on the decks as the sexual essence of house music seeped from the pores of his fans." The second hour of Guetta's set, he played mostly songs from his 2007 album “Poplife”. Songs like “Baby when the light's go Out” and “Love is Gone” were met with accompanying vocals from the clubbers at Spin. On a mission, I slowly made my way through people belting out drunken choruses and thick foreign accents. I finally made it under the stage, where all the sound was emerging from. You know you're doing something right when you can feel the bass in your bones, as it vibrates your skull and stimulates your spine. While I stood in front of the sub-woofers, and directly below the worlds number five DJ, Guetta suddenly cut the sound. I thought for a second that I had just lost my hearing. We all thought it was over, but he started it back up again to thunderous applause.
Ultimately, the night was a huge success. The club was packed, and it seemed at times that there were too many people in there. That can often inhibit the enjoyment of a show, and it was annoying at times, but overall Spin did a great job in putting on the show. The lights on the stage were amazing, changing colors every second to the sound of the music. "That can often inhibit the enjoyment of a show, and it was annoying at times, but overall Spin did a great job in putting on the show." David Guetta did an absolutely amazing job with the show. Much like he's done with his career, Guetta set a standard for what a house show should be like. It's always great to see a DJs personality come through in their music and in their show. You can tell from his persona that he likes to just get up there and have fun. On Tuesday night, Guetta put on a world-class performance, and proved why he's the best house DJ in the world.
