PEKING DUCK

2000 and One (Dylan Hermilijn) is an Amsterdam-based producer and DJ that has been bringing tunes to the world-wide electronic community since the 80's. With solid productions already at his back, we now see him releasing his newest efforts on similarly Amsterdam-based, Intacto Records. Peking Duck is a tech-house track that has some groove to it, I'll admit. The strength of this track lies solely in its intelligently-placed drum patterns. Deep and catchy, the rhythm undoubtedly makes this track for me. You can't help but want to find yourself moving to its progression, but where it falls down is in its monotony. The track is intentionally subtle, I'll wager, but it doesn't't quite do enough to validate its almost eight-minute length. I can easily see this track doing well as a filler-track, or something used to provide layer to its predecessor and successor in a set, as its simplicity makes it terribly mixable. But four minutes into it, I was ready for something new. The Dub mix of this track wins in my book. Leading off with variations of the same catchy rhythm that we see in the main mix, this mix makes an effort to escape the monotony. With some persistent, techy tweakiness that gives the track an edge, the Dub mix could arguably get some hands in the air. More engaging than the first, with the benefit of that moving drum pattern, this one stands up as a dance-floor filler. Though not necessarily of jaw-dropping material, Peking Duck stands up as a solid piece of production. I foresee the Dub version getting more prime-time play, but can't help but dig on the main mix as a groove-inspiring, rhythmic experience. Track-list: | |
