'..the usual suspects of minimal, including Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Cassy and Alex Under all deliver a piece of the pie'

Resist Music has released a compilation by the controversial name of Destroy Minimal. Judging on the title, one could expect a protest against the seemingly endless stream of releases in the genre, which are potentially indicative of its move further down the mainstream.

This apparent misjudgement is quickly restored after a glimpse at the track-listing. Apart from some tech-house, deep house, electro and neotrance gems, the usual suspects of minimal, including Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Cassy and Alex Under all deliver a piece of the pie, which does not look too shabby with nearly all of today's hit-makers on the list.

In any event, any release by resist is worth noting, as the same people have brought us the essential at the controls series earlier, with both James Holden and collective M.A.N.D.Y. offering excellent tunage. Nevertheless, the track-listing does resemble that of many of the compilations out there on the more minimal oriented labels, with one key difference; the DJ that performed the mix is only mentioned at the end of the liner notes, its the genre that speaks.

For the first time, a large label launches a mix comp revolving around the minimal genre and its bordering genres, rather than the DJ. This is an easy way out for the music listener that knows his genres, but not the specifics of the scene; an innovation certainly justified in the case of minimal, as it has dominated many of this year's electronic music festivals and has sneaked onto Ibiza, sending more proggy DJs back into their caves. It does raise some issues, as a more mainstream approach tends to correlate with a silent demise within the underground.

Fact is that after four years painted in minimalism, dubstep is banging on the doors, offering perhaps a more gritty form of minimal to an ever growing group of forerunners within the underground.
