365MAG ALBUM REVIEW: GU33 - RIO: MIXED BY LAYO & BUSHWACKA!

' The boys had something very special in mind this time...' | (Newcastle, UK) - Global Underground is back with the release of the 33rd installment in the series, and it's up to Layo and Bushwacka to present us their personal view on electronic music. Famous for their 2003 global chart breaker Love Story, this double CD package is based on one of their recent gigs in Rio de Janeiro, in which eclecticism was the keyword. Just eclectic tunes then? Depends on how you look at it. The boys had something very special in mind this time... The first CD opens up with a short sample of Ellis D's classic Took My Love Away, introducing the mix with old-school synths and vocals. What follows is a CD full of vintage beats from the very beginning of house music. Surrender Yourself (Ballroom Mix) by Daou is a strong, pumping house tune full of bongo's, sharp cymbals and the original 90's house sequence build-up: repetitive beat-loops, twists, somewhat cheesy synth melodies and reverb vocals. In other words, pretty cool stuff! The thing about 90's house music is that lots of those tracks seem to be oozed in some kind of trancey cover. Lots of echoes, reverb effects and returning sounds were used to create a spacey atmosphere, and Layo and Bushwacka! seem to dive deeper in this vibe with some of the most hypnotising records they could find.
