(London, UK) - Turnmills, one of London's all-time favourite clubbing hot-spots, is about to close.

The venue on the corner of Turnmill Street and Clerkenwell Road was the first to obtain a 24 hour dance licence in the UK, single-handedly creating the trend of all-night clubbing in the 1990's. It was also the home of Trade, the first after hours club in Britain.

The 90's certainly marked the heydays of the Gallery Turnmills, often featuring impressive international lineups, with frequent guests including the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and Judge Jules. However, during the past few years the amount of visitors has been dwindling, most likely the reason for the club's demise.

Despite its importance in the history of dance music, and the fact that the venue is owned by the family of well-known DJ Tall Paul, money talks as clubbers are making way for office space, luxury apartments and even several shops.

Apparently building owner Danny Newman got a permit to add another floor to the building, and convert it into office space, although the timing of things is as of yet unknown. Supposedly, there is still some time left in the club's rental contract, although the Turnmills sign has already been removed from the building's facade.

There is, however, light at the end of the tunnel, as the club's management is reportedly looking for an alternative. Watch this space for more details.
