THE 10 QUESTIONS: MUSCLES

Australian electro pop artist Muscles has just released his debut album on Modular. Entitled Guns, Babes, Lemonades the album is best be described as a modernist take on big beat, mixing pop hooks with acid squelches and an unashamed lust for the dance-floor.

Muscles' debut album shot straight into the charts in his native country Australia, and with loads of sold out performances he's definitely to be called a fast rising star. 365Mag visited the Australian for a few short questions.

1. What is your first memory of music?
I had a Sesame Street cassette tape, and a strange interactive story toy where you put in the cassette and it tells a story, and you push buttons to, like, choose your own adventure game. "If you would like to go down the red road, push the red button. If you would like to go down the blue road, push the blue button". My mind rips apart trying to figure out how it worked.

2. What is your favorite piece of equipment you use in the studio or when DJing? Why?
My favourite piece of equipment is this weird synth software that a collective of nerds made in Germany last decade. I'm not going to reveal the name because I nearly lost my arm getting a hold of a copy. But I am not a DJ; I did it three times last year for fun but just can't get into it after playing live to thousands of people.

3. What is your current top 5?
I'm usually behind everyone like 6 months, haven't listened to much new stuff cause of touring. These CDs I put in my 6 CD stacker in the car.
1. Four Tet - Ringer EP
2: James Holden - The Idiots Are Winning
3: Pentangle - Basket Of Light
4: White Williams - New Violence EP
5: Simian Mobile Disco - Attack Decay Sustain Release

4. Sex, Drugs or Rock 'n Roll?
Rock n Roll all the way. I'll leave the rest for everyone who come to my shows.

5. What music, outside the electronic spectrum, do you listen to?
Lots of folky stuff with rhythm that makes you want to dance. Beats in general; I've been trying a new thing where I setup two stereos next to each other and listen to two records at once. My attention span is really short, so it makes me able to listen right through from start to finish.

6. Do you think (dance) music is able to lie?
When you're five years old and your mum yells, "Brush your teeth before you go to bed!" But then you go to bed without brushing. Music can be like that.

7. What is the last book you read and what did you think of it?
Haven't read any books since I was in high school. I read lots of magazines on airplanes, sometimes I read magazines that have IBIZA on the front in big writing.

8. Are all your friends involved in (dance) music?
I only really met people making music once I started playing live, before that I was kind of on my own.

9. What would you do with a million ping pong balls?
I'd purchase Scrooge McDuck's moneybin and fill it with the balls, swim in it for exercise like it was water (or money).

10. What can we expect of you in the near future?
I was going to do a world tour but I'd rather work on my new album instead. My first album Guns Babes Lemonade was mostly written and recorded in early 2006 and since then I got hundreds of new production ideas and inspiration for songs. Expect me coming to your country towards the end of the year!
